THE HERMITAGE Plantation nestles in lush grounds and gardens of mango trees , breadfruit , palms and flowering shrubs on a hillside which affords splendid views of the sea in the distance . The Hermitage ’ s Great House is an outstanding feature of the hotel and sets the tone ; dating from 1740 , it is one of the oldest wooden houses in the Caribbean and under the careful supervision of the Lupinacci family who own the hotel and who raised their own children here , it has been preserved with antique furniture yet has all the atmosphere of a charming private house . There is a well-stocked library and sitting room for your use . Your accommodation is in pretty , restored gingerbread houses of varying sizes scattered throughout the grounds with names such as Blue House , Treetops and Carriage House . Furnished with antique and locally-made wooden furniture , such as canopy beds , your ‘ cottage ’ feels authentic , quaint and charming . Meals are served in the Great House , often on the verandah overlooking the gardens . The emphasis is on tradition and speciality dishes include Callaloo Soup and Johnny Cakes , Mahi Mahi Steamed in Banana Leaf and Baked Red Snapper stuffed with Lobster . There is a swimming pool and tennis court at the hotel and beaches are just a couple of miles away with a shuttle service provided by the hotel .
