TRAVELLING THERE Self-drive from Calais to Provence . The most direct route is along the motorway via Reims , Dijon and Lyon . We advise at least one , if not two , overnight stops each way to cover the distance in comfort . We recommend stops in Picardy , Champagne , Burgundy and Lyon . By air We recommend flying British Airways London to Marseille or Nice . No frills flights can be arranged into Nice from UK regional airports . Eurostar and TGV Take Eurostar to Lille or Paris and then TGV to Avignon , Aix or Nice . If you leave London at about 7am , Avignon is usually reached just after 3pm . There are some direct London to Avignon services on Saturdays in the summer . Collect your hire-car at the station and then take any of our holidays .
