From the front of the hotel , the property might be mistaken for a large family home . With just 29 rooms , this boutique hotel channels the intimacy of a family home , which makes guests feel especially welcome . The crowning glory of this hotel may well be Xavier Mathieu ’ s Michelin-starred restaurant , which sits at the heart of the hotel ’ s ethos of quality and luxury . The restaurant serves dishes inspired by the seasonal ingredients of Provence , which can be enjoyed on the terrace . Xavier Mathieu also host cookery classes for guests . Lighter , informal fare is served at the Bistrot Le Café de la Fontaine , named after the fountain around which the tables are gathered . The Carita Spa has a more distinctly modern feel , and beauty treatments incorporate the produce of the region , particularly the lavender . The guestrooms are all elegantly furnished . A classical beauty is evident in the wooden furnishings , the ornate mirror frames and lampstands , and the cool terracotta floor tiles . On a slight hill a couple of miles outside the hill-top village of Joucas in the Vaucluse between Ventoux and the Lubéron , the Mas des Herbes Blanches enjoys privileged views over the Lubéron and the village of Roussillon . Built of local stone in the style of a low , Provençal ‘ mas ’ or farmhouse , the Mas des Herbes Blanches is a supremely comfortable , five-star Relais & Châteaux hotel . Yet , for all its quality of surroundings and service , the Mas des Herbes Blanches is unpretentious , cosy , and relaxing - a divine holiday hotel , thoroughly deserving of a stay . In its own grounds of olives and sycamores , with clumps of lavender and vineyards just below , the Mas des Herbes Blanches offers comfortable lounges , a stylish , rustic-modern bar , a sun terrace and open-air swimming pool with panoramas of the greeny-grey Lubéron hills and of course the restaurant with its modern fire-place , views and elegant and calm atmosphere . The food in the hotel ' s restaurant is outstandingly interesting , and the quality of flavours , presentation and taste are superb . The bedrooms all have telephone , television and mini-bar and vary in size . All have balcony or terrace , bath and wc , and air conditioning , but the standard rooms tend to be north-facing , and the superiors are larger with spacious bathrooms . The decoration is simple in a stylish way , but fitting for the climate , with white-washed walls complementing sands and ochres in the material and furnishings . We cannot recommend the Mas des Herbes Blanches highly enough either for a long , relaxing stay in this delicious region or for just a couple of nights if you want to tour Provence and the South of France .
