Just seven hundred metres from the sea , the Masseria San Domenico ( Spa-Thalasso & Golf ) is set amongst orchards and olive groves where fresh local produce is cultivated and can be sampled by guests . In the spacious grounds is a fabulous and very large swimming pool with naturally�filtered seawater , one side of which is formed by a charming rockery . A masseria was originally a fortified farmhouse ; the buildings of the property are made from white local stone and its oldest structure � the tower which was originally built for defence purposes � dates back to the 15th Century . Dinner can be taken outside on an evocative terrace overlooking the pool and grounds or in the gracious restaurant with its impressive fireplace and vaulted ceilings . The menu consists of delicious regional specialities and provides an excellent introduction to Pugliese cuisine . There is also an elegant bar terrace with custom�made wrought iron furniture , where drinks and snacks are served all day . The ‘ frantoio ’ or oil press of the original farmhouse has been preserved and can be seen in the foundations of the Masseria . The bedrooms , situated in two buildings , have marble floors and are elegantly decorated . There is an excellent thalassotherapy centre at the
hotel with a wide range of beauty treatments available . Guests using these facilities can also enjoy a low calorie menu which includes local seafood dishes . The San Domenico golf course ( 18 holes ), is situated four kilometres away on the sea front . Highly recommended as a great holiday hotel in a still relatively unexplored part of Italy .
