The area was originally known as the Home of the Giants in Norse mythology due to the fact that Norway ’ s 23 highest mountains are all located within its borders . The two highest of these are also the focal points of two of Norway ’ s top three
most iconic hikes . A popular starting point for the Galdhøppigen hike is Spiterstulen Mountain Lodge , which lies 1,100 metres above sea level . Jotunheimen is home to over 50 marked trails and you will find roughly 70 more in the surrounding area , meaning there is something to suit all ages and ability levels . On the opposite end of the altitude scale , the Dumma Valley features a series of labyrinthine caves home to narrow passageways and underground waterfalls carved out by the River Dumma . Other popular activities here include climbing and rafting . The River Sjoa is considered the best river in Norway for rafting , and there are also options to go canyoning and river boarding on the crystal blue waters . The town of Lom is a picturesque settlement famous for its striking Stave Church , which is one of the biggest of its kind and dates from 1158 .

Mountain walking and climbing Galdhoppigen at 2,469m is the highest mountain in Norway and trips can be arranged with Juvasshytta as the starting point . Group hikes can be arranged from 1 June until 15 September . There are adult and child prices ( from 7 years only ) of about NOK 380 per person . Other popular destinations incldue Gittertind , Besseggen and Kyrkja by Leirvassbu . Summer skiing Galdhoppigen summer ski centre is about 30 minutes ’ drive from Elveseter . It is a modern ski centre with ski equipment rental . Climate park At the foot of Galdhoppigen
you can visit the Climate Park , which provides guided tours through the park and a 60 metre long tunnel under the ice that is 6000 years old . Climbing park Galdhoppigen climbing park is about 15 minutes ’ drive away from Elveseter . The park has different climbing routes for different abilities , including for adults and children . Rafting Rafting is possible on the Sjoa river . The hotel can suggest the local companies to book through . Choice of quieter family trips or ones on wilder water .
