The Hotel Union Øye in Norangsfjorden is a distinctly traditional , boutique 4-star hotel with 30 rooms , situated in countryside near the village of Øye and a few hundred metres from the Norangsfjord . The hotel has been welcoming guests since 1891 and has attracted many well-known figures in that time from kings and queens to writers and composers including Knut Hamsun , Sir Arthur Conan Doyle , Edvard Grieg and Henrik Ibsen . It is the dramatic location , scenery and tranquil surroundings that appealed over a hundred years ago and that continue to appeal to the visitor today . A peaceful garden , magnificent scenery , mountain peaks and the waters of nearby fjords await you . The hotel ’ s 30 rooms are individually furnished : perhaps with painted wooden panelling or richly coloured wallpaper , some have 4-poster beds , paintings of local scenes . One room , the Blue Room , is , according to legend , haunted and one of the most haunted sites in Norway . Apparently the removal of the silver salver of garlic left in the room is meant to help summon the spirit of Linda . Other rooms are named after the well-known guests of the past who have stayed here . Dinner is served in the elegant dining room , a 3-course meal , created by the chef from seasonal , local ingredients . The Sun Lounge has cosy armchairs and sofas , antique tapestries and paintings , potted plants and rugs thrown over the parquet floor and is a wonderful place to sit and read or to enjoy an after-dinner coffee . The natural location of mountains and water attract visitors and the hotel will help you to enjoy the area to the full with local guides for hikes and kayaking that can be arranged , kayak and bike hire , and excursions on the fjords in the hotel ’ s own boats . If you prefer to have a car and driver for a day ’ s scenic drives , that can be arranged too . This is a unique place to stay in a remote , stunning , natural landscape .
