BY BOAT AND FERRY
There are ferry services between Denmark and Norway , for example , from Copenhagen to Oslo ( 17 hours 15 minutes , operated by DFDS , daily departures ) and from Frederikshavn to Oslo ( 9 hours 15 minutes , operated by DFDS , seven departures a week ). There is also a service from Kiel in northern Germany to Oslo ( 20 hours , operated by Color Line , daily departures ). Within Norway the most famous ferry service is the Hurtigruten line . This service covers the coastal distance from Bergen to Kirkenes ( over 2,500 kms ) with 34 stops . Bergen to Kirkenes takes seven days and you can choose from a variety of cabins on board . We recommend that you do part of the journey by boat , perhaps Bergen to Trondheim , which takes 3 days , or Bodø to Svolvaer in the Lofoten Islands which can be done within one day . You can time your voyage to do parts of it by day and parts overnight . There are also numerous ferries along the fjords , for example from Bergen to Flåm along the Sognefjord , which takes about five hours . Roll-on , roll-off car ferries operate across the fjords , too , and are indispensable as a means of travelling by car .
BY HIRE-CAR
To explore within an area or to cover parts of the country , it ’ s recommended to have the use of a hire-car . Roads in Norway are good , and you will need to board ferries for many routes . In fact , over 100 public roadways require cars to board a ferry . You don ’ t book ahead for these but you do need to allow for extra time . This is part of the charm of driving yourself around Norway . The one drawback is that one-way car drop-off charges are high due to the complexity and time of returning the car to its original destination . We will work with you to ensure the most practical solution to the use of a hire-car in Norway .
