Driving distances from the nearest airport may be long , but it is possible to break your journey along the way . Spain is home to a huge number of exciting cities and fascinating towns to keep visitors busy . From the cosmopolitan metropolises of Madrid and Barcelona , to the seaside resorts of San Sebastián and Valencia , and the historical cities of Burgos or Santiago de Compostela , there are plenty of destinations to choose from . While some towns and cities can be explored within a couple of days , some require slightly longer stays thanks to the daytrip possibilities in the surrounding area . Many of these urban locations are linked by speedy and convenient rail connections , making it easy to hop from one destination to another .
