IN A QUIET STREET off the busy Galle Road , Casa Colombo Hotel occupies a converted mansion that typifies colonial excess . Built around 200 years ago by a prominent Indian trading family , the architecture is grand and impressive with a pristine white façade exuding refined elegance . In its 2006 renovation , the building ’ s original features – such as age-old carved arches , moulded ceilings and mosaic floors – were magnificently preserved alongside the new introduction of modern interior design . This is best seen in the glamorous lobby , which is lined with octagonal-shaped carved window arches and paved with Moorish-style floor tiles , while fixtures and furnishings show a retro flare . Dine at HVN Restaurant , where guests are served a menu of local flavours under the gold carved ceiling of what used to be the mansion ’ s grand hall . Other public spaces include the outdoor terrace of T-Republic or the cubic , glass-walled extension of Zaza Bar . The 12 suites have been custom-designed using locally sourced materials , and guests are tended on by a personalised butler service performed by ‘ Casa Domos .’ Leisure facilities include an indulgent spa service and a unique ‘ pink pool ’ in the walled courtyard , which is lit by vibrant pink-coloured light by night and surrounded by glass loungers and canopied daybeds .
