Its period colonial Dutch features , contemporary art , spacious living areas , discreet service , shady pool , tropical English garden and croquet lawn , together with some exquisite extra touches , make this former residence of a Dutch East India Admiral a treasure of a place to stay . The classic Dutch building , with its high-pitched terracotta roof and continuous colonnade , forms a u-shape around a courtyard , opening up a splendid view of the croquet lawn and mature trees , with Galle in the distance . The four bedrooms at the Dutch House boast muslin canopied four-poster beds , luxurious silk drapes , cool floors and stunning soft furnishings . Each has a private sitting area with a comfortable sofa and writing desk and a spacious bathroom fitted with traditional clawfooted bath tub . Guests can enjoy a leisurely English breakfast or Sri Lankan specials such as hoppers , served in the courtyard , veranda , or garden . Light lunches and snacks are served throughout the day at the Dutch House , whilst dinner is served at the next door sister property , the Sun House . The Dutch House is a perfect base for relaxing and excursions to explore Galle , the inland nature reserves and villages , and along the south coast .
