The Chateau de Mercuès enjoys a splendid location surrounded by woods , fields and vineyards above the valley of the River Lot a few miles to the west of the town of Cahors . The chateau is a typically impressive mediaeval French castle and once belonged to the bishop-counts of Cahors . Today a four-star hotel with 24 rooms and 6 suites and a Relais & Châteaux member , the Chateau de Mercuès offers comfortable accommodation and good leisure facilities in a historic , traditional atmosphere . The hotel has spacious grounds with a terrace , two tennis courts and a swimming pool . There is also an interesting inner courtyard , though a striking and unusual feature of the hotel is the wine cellar , where barrels of the wine produced at the chateau are stored .
