TRAVELLING THERE Self-drive Direct ferry services from Plymouth to Roscoff ( 6 hrs ), Poole to St Malo ( 8 hrs ), Portsmouth to St Malo ( 9 hrs ). Overnight crossings take longer . Or you can travel from Portsmouth to Cherbourg or Poole to Cherbourg and then drive . Another recommendation is to travel Dover to Calais if you want a short crossing , then spend one night in Normandy on the way out and / or on the way back .
