AN 18TH CENTURY MANSION , the Fort Printers has been restored into a small boutique hotel in the heart of the historic Galle Fort . At Fort Printers you enter an enchanting world of high ceilings , subtle lighting , antique and modern furnishings , crisp white linens , velvet bedspreads , rich silks , polished cement and original wooden floors . The mansion ’ s origins can be traced back to the Dutch period , although Moslem traders , English colonialists , and brief spells as a printing house and a school , have also contributed to its unique character . The entrance of this charming private hotel opens into a lofty lounge with comfy sofas and artefacts , leading through to a tranquil and beautiful inner courtyard , where an inviting lap pool is to be found . At the dining terrace in the courtyard , they serve breakfasts and an imaginative menu of Sri Lankan curries and Mediterranean-inspired cuisine . One of the bedrooms is on the ground floor by the pool , whilst the other four bedrooms are up a fine teak staircase on the first floor . The accommodation is simple , with no ‘ mod-cons ’, yet charming , and , in an attempt to fit in with original structure of the building , some of the ‘ en suite bathrooms ’ entail particularly intriguing designs . The Fort Printers may be booked for exclusive use or as separate rooms .

THIS 1690s DUTCH merchant ’ s house was redesigned by a French Count in 1923 and , after spells as a gem factory and bakery , was turned into a luxurious boutique hotel in 2004 . The buildings are arranged around a central courtyard , with a swimming pool as its centrepiece ; a perfect place for a lazy afternoon reading or for taking tea with a slice of freshly baked cake . Public areas house comfy sofas , Dutch antiques , and ornate flower displays rising out of giant urns . Fine porcelain features prominently along one wall of the opulent lounge and in the aptly named ‘ Porcelain suite ’. The bedrooms and suites contain top-of-the-range furnishings and vary from Garden Rooms , opening onto the courtyard , to the palatial Grand Apartment of the Comte de Mauny , a favourite with honeymooners .
